Aranth is the leader of the bounty hunters who are searching for the Collector on behalf of the city of Westdale. Aranth and his team will serve their employer to the death if need be. Aranth believes the sanctity of his role as service provider is the most important thing above all else. His loyalty to an employer is unwavering.

Aranth is polite and generally kind, yet still tough when need be and is quick to lose his temper, particularly if someone gets in the way of doing his job. He’d probably make for a good town sheriff, but hates to be locked down to one place. He enjoys the traveling he does as a bounty hunter.

Summary

Garret is a man who came to wealth by lying, cheating and stealing. He rarely takes no for an answer. He exudes confidence, but deep down is a lonely, wretched man whose greatest fear is being alone for eternity. His obsession with wealth cannot fill the void he feels. He has a extremely volatile temper. Garret is a vampire, but he holds this secret close.

Garret only cares about himself and his own wealth, wants, needs, and goals. He has no interest in politics, law, royalty, etc.

Very few people know Garret’s real name, as he usually calls himself the Collector.

Connection to Franthia

Garret was a frequent customer of a warmflanks named Franthia who worked out of a saloon on the outskirts of Greenwood Village. Garret fell in love with Franthia and wanted her and her son to become his family, but Franthia valued her freedom and refused Garret’s advances. Garret murdered Franthia at the saloon by slashing her across the neck with his sharp finger nails, causing her to bleed out. His temper prevented him from turning her into a vampire and he allowed her to die, but he would later come to regret that. He used his vampiric mist form to enter and leave the saloon undetected, but several saloon patrons claimed to see strange things that night.

The night Franthia was murdered, her son Ferdinand was due to arrive from out of town to visit Franthia. Garret intercepted Ferdinand before he reached town and convinced him to accompany him to the Greenwood Cemetery, where he murdered him in the same manner that he murdered Franthia.

Franthia and Ferdinand’s spirits refused to rest. Once Garret became aware of this, he devised a scheme to employ a group of adventurers to capture the spirits of Franthia, Ferdinand, and a street dog named Furball whom Franthia had cared for, with the ultimate goal of forming an eternal family as he was never able to do while Franthia was alive. He has secretly been working on a prototype containment unit for incorporeal creatures – a large cage of sorts with solid but translucent walls, floor and ceiling which entraps incorporeal creatures, preventing their escape.

While alive:

  • Size & Type: Medium Humanoid (Elf)
  • Alignment: Lawful Neutral

(Deceased) Franthia was fully devoted to her son and would lie, cheat, steal or kill (if needed) to protect him. Working at the saloon as a warmflanks, Franthia would not shy away from helping a customer cheat at cards if it meant she could earn extra money to care for her son.

One evening, Franthia caught glimpse of a street dog roaming and wandering for food. Franthia stole some scraps of meat from the saloon and followed the dog deeper into town, to an alley the dog considered home. Every night since, until her death, Franthia would bring scraps of meat or vegetables to the dog, whom she affectionately named Furball.

One of Franthia’s customers, known only as the Collector to most, fell in love with Franthia and desired to make a family with her, but she rejected his advances. She was eventually murdered by him in her room at the saloon where she worked. The murder was hidden, due to the Collector having used his mist form to enter and leave the saloon.

Franthia’s body is buried in a plot at Greenwood Cemetery. The plot was paid for by Lefty Higgins using gold he found stashed away in Franthia’s room.

Afterlife

Franthia’s spirit lives on in the form of a Woeful Banshee. Her spirit haunts the upper rooms of the saloon where she worked while alive. Her spirit will not rest until she has confirmation that her son, Ferdinand, is safe and content. Franthia’s spirit is bound to the saloon and cannot leave of her own volition, but longs to leave in search of her son, Ferdinand.

While alive:

  • Size & Type: Medium Humanoid (Half-Elf)
  • Alignment: Neutral

(Deceased) Ferdinand was cynical about the world. He saw how much strife his mother, Franthia, went through just to earn a living for them both. At a young age, Ferdinand learned to watch out for himself even though his mother cared for him deeply.

Ferdinand always loved snakes as a younf boy, which carried over into his adult life.

At age 16 Ferdinand went out into the world to earn a living in hopes of one day returning to care for his mother. Ferdinand had no preference for law or chaos and was entirely focused on self survival.

At age 18, Ferdinand planned on returning to Greenwood Village to visit his mother. The evening he arrived near town, he was intercepted by the Collector, who earlier that evening had murdered Ferdinand’s mother. Ferdinand was convinced to visit the Greenwood Cemetery with the Collector, where he too was murdered. The Collector admitted to murdering his mother after he delivered the soon-to-be fatal blow to Ferdinand. Ferdinand died knowing his mother had been murdered and wanted nothing more than to avenge his mother’s death as he took his last breath.

Afterlife

Ferdinand’s spirit lives on in the form of a Ghost. His spirit haunts a graveyard where he was murdered by the same man who murdered his mother, Franthia, earlier that same day. Ferdinand’s spirit won’t rest until it gets revenge on the man who murdered him & his mother. Ferdinand is bound to the cemetery and cannot leave of his own volition, but longs to find his murderer.

While alive:

  • Size & Type: Medium Beast (Canine)
  • Alignment: Neutral

(Deceased) Furball was a homeless dog, having been born from a pack of dogs living on the street. Furball’s mother and litter mates died while Furball was young. One evening, Furball passed by the saloon where a wamrflanks named Franthia worked. Franthia followed the dog to an alley in town, and from that day until her death, she brought scraps of meat and vegetables to the dog whenever she could. When Franthia stopped showing up with scraps, Furball became depressed and stopped eating. Eventually he succumbed to starvation and died in spite of local children trying to care for him.

Afterlife

Furball’s spirit lives on in the form of a Spectral Hound. His spirit haunts the alleys he considered his home while alive. His spirit won’t rest until he is reunited with Franthia.

Appendix: The Collector’s Note

Hand Written Note From The Collector

You’ve been hired to obtain a set of artifacts and use them to capture three specific undead creatures.

The first of three artifacts is a set pyramid-shaped stones which have been provided to you. You must obtain two other artifacts: a wand and an amulet. These artifacts can be found at the archaeological dig site in the wooded hills 10 miles north of Greenwood Village. The dig site is guarded 24 hours a day. The watchmen and archaeology team camp directly on site.

Once all artifacts have been obtained, you should practice with them to learn how they operate. You can find a plethora of incorporeal creatures in the sewers below Greenwood Village. The sewers can be accessed via an impoverished neighborhood known as The Alley.

After you have successfully learned how to use the artifacts, you must hunt down and capture three specific undead quarry: a spectral hound from The Alley neighborhood in Greenwood Village, a banshee from the Wood Spike saloon on the western outskirts of Greenwood Village, and a ghost from the Greenwood Cemetery 1/2 mile south of town.

In 10 days, I shall meet you after sunset at the crossroads on the eastern outskirts of Greenwood Village. Bring me the artifacts and undead quarry, and payment shall be yours.
